MagicThe dog-headed Egyptian deity Anubis, representing the magus (or 'mighty one'), straddles the Nile and channels celestial energies to earth from the dog-star Sirius, called Sothis by the Egyptians. Anubis as the psychopomp or 'conductor of souls' was often identified with Hermes (Mercury), and so is also called Hermanubis. The celestial movements of Sothis/Sirius signaled the flood of the Nile, also called Sothis ("as above, so below.") Traditionally this card depicts the Hermetic axiom, "As above, so below," which here becomes literal as both star and river bear the same name. In the Blakean interpretation, the magus is Los, the Zoa of Poetry and prophecy, defined as truth through time. Thus he is a time-lord, with the river of life flowing between his legs.
