In Blake's symbology, upward flight signifies energy - the life force associated with man's desires. The swan embodies purity, grace, and fertility, in union with the youth's naked innocence. In Greek mythology, the swan is the mount of Apollo, the god of music whose instrument was a lyre, and who Blake related to the divine imagination. The lyre is the instrument of Luvah, the Zoa of Music.
